The 6th Advanced Computing Meeting will bring together Portugal’s advanced computing community to discuss access to computing resources, emerging technologies, and the sector’s future in Portugal and Europe.

Taking place on 3 and 4 November 2026 at the University of Minho in Braga, the event is organised by Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), through FCCN, in partnership with the University of Minho and the National Centre for Advanced Computing (CNCA).

Among the discussed topics are the opportunities offered by the CNCA and the advanced computing services, as well as by European initiatives such as the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, EuroCC3, and the BSC AI Factory. The program will also include dedicated sessions on artificial intelligence applications in research and industry, preparation for next-generation computing, and access to European supercomputers, including Deucalion.

The 2026 edition also aims to strengthen the dialogue between academia, industry, government, and research centres in Portugal.

From 7 to 9 October 2026, the EPICURE community gathered at ACC Cyfronet AGH in Kraków for three days of hands-on work focused on improving the performance of high-performance computing (HPC) and (AI) applications.

At the “EPICURE Hackathon: Code Optimisation for HPC and AI Workloads”, teams brought their own scientific codes and AI workloads and worked alongside EPICURE mentors. Together, they identified bottlenecks, improved CPU and GPU performance, optimised training and inference pipelines, and explored profiling, parallelisation and scaling techniques. Participants also had access to JUPITER, Europe’s first exascale supercomputer, and Helios, one of Poland’s advanced computing systems.

The hackathon allowed participants to turn specific performance challenges into measurable improvements that could continue beyond the event.

On 25 September 2026, Deucalion will take part in European Researchers’ Night at Forum Braga. Organised in Braga by the University of Minho’s School of Sciences, the event will take place from 2.30 p.m. to midnight.

The initiative brings researchers and the public closer together through accessible and entertaining activities that demonstrate the role of research, science and innovation in everyday life. It also seeks to pique interest in scientific careers, particularly among younger audiences, while challenging the idea of researchers as distant or inaccessible.

At the Deucalion stand, visitors will discover how supercomputers work, what they can achieve and how they are programmed. Through interactive activities and demonstrations, participants will explore parallel processing, high-performance computing (HPC) and the role of supercomputing in areas such as climate research, medicine, scientific simulations and artificial intelligence.

EuroHPC User Days 2026 brought Europe’s supercomputing community to Dublin from 22 to 24 September for three days centred on the European high-performance computing, quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI) resources’ users.

Across plenary and parallel sessions, participants shared projects, use cases and best practices while exploring topics ranging from scientific computing and Large Language Models to quantum resources, AI Factories and Europe’s evolving supercomputing ecosystem. The event also created space for users to exchange feedback and learn more about the support and opportunities available through the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking.

ISC High Performance 2026 turned Hamburg into a meeting point for the global high-performance computing (HPC) community from 22 to 26 June.

Under the theme “Connecting the Dots”, ISC26 explored the growing convergence of HPC, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing and cloud technologies. The programme combined technical sessions, research presentations, tutorials, workshops and an international exhibition, with a strong focus on the technologies shaping the next generation of scientific computing.

From 5 to 7 May 2026, Jornadas FCCN brought Portugal’s higher education and research community together at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto. Organised by FCCN, the digital services unit of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the event featured presentations, plenary sessions, workshops and opportunities for knowledge exchange across Connectivity, Computing, Collaboration, Knowledge and Security.

Deucalion took part in the programme through a practical session dedicated to Deucalion and MareNostrum 5. The demonstration showcased the capabilities of both supercomputers and the advanced computing infrastructures that can support the resolution of complex scientific and technological challenges.

From 27 to 29 April 2026, researchers, developers and HPC users gathered at INESC TEC in Porto and online for the EPICURE Hackathon on Code Optimisation for Heterogeneous HPC Environments. Participants worked directly on optimisation challenges, either by bringing their own applications to the Custom Track or by joining guided starter projects with support from expert mentors.

Deucalion played a central role throughout the programme. Members of its operations and user support teams contributed to the technical sessions and mentoring activities, including a presentation on optimising scientific code on Deucalion’s ARM partition. The event concluded with final project presentations and awards, with the three highest-ranked teams receiving 100,000, 50,000 and 25,000 Deucalion core-hours to continue developing their work.

From 21 to 23 April 2026, Deucalion welcomed the EasyBuild community to Guimarães for the 11th EasyBuild User Meeting.

Over three days, experienced users, developers and maintainers came together to exchange knowledge, share technical developments and explore advanced use cases involving EasyBuild and related open-source tools.

Hosted at the University of Minho‘s Azurém Campus, the event offered both on-site and online participation, enabling members of the international EasyBuild community to join the meeting and contribute to the exchange of expertise.

The 2026 edition of UMinho Open Doors (UPA) took place from 5 to 7 March at the Azurém Campus in Guimarães. The initiative presented the University’s educational offering through an exhibition of all UMinho Schools and Institutes. Participants could also visit the facilities and discover the University’s resources through guided tours, workshops, lectures and other activities.

UPA provided an opportunity to learn more about the infrastructure and services available to the UMinho student community, both to support their studies and to develop cross-disciplinary skills, essential for the integration of future professionals into the labour market.

All activities were free of charge, subject to registration and limited availability. Individual and group registrations were open to 9th-grade and secondary school students, teachers, vocational counsellors, parents and guardians.

From 2 to 6 February 2026, INESC TEC welcomed high school students for the second edition of its Open Week, held under the theme “Discovering the Wonderful World of Science and Engineering”.

Throughout the week, students took part in 11 activities covering areas such as Power and Energy, Marine, Industrial and Agricultural Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and Communications. Guided by INESC TEC researchers, participants explored the laboratories and gained hands-on experience of how science and engineering are being used to address real-world challenges.

As part of the programme, the students from Braga and the surrounding region also had the opportunity to visit Deucalion, Portugal’s supercomputer. During the visit, they joined practical experiences on supercomputing and artificial intelligence.

Python took centre stage at the EPICURE Python Meets HPC Hackathon, held from 10 to 12 December 2025 at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, with both on-site and online participation.

The event challenged researchers, developers and high-performance computing (HPC) practitioners to improve the performance and scalability of Python applications for HPC. Participants worked on real code, explored profiling and parallelisation techniques, contributed to open-source projects and received guidance from specialists across the EPICURE and European HPC communities.

SC25 brought the global supercomputing community to St. Louis from 16 to 21 November 2025 under the theme “HPC Ignites”.

Across its technical programme and exhibition, the conference showcased how high-performance computing (HPC) continues to drive advances in artificial intelligence (AI), scientific research, data analytics, computing architectures, networks and large-scale systems, while creating a space for knowledge exchange across the international HPC community.

Advanced computing moved from theory to practice at the 5th Advanced Computing Meeting, held at the University of Aveiro on 22 and 23 October 2025. The event brought together researchers, technical specialists, companies and representatives from national and international institutions to discuss the present and future of high-performance computing (HPC), quantum computing, EuroHPC resources and AI Factories.

Deucalion featured prominently in the programme. A dedicated masterclass introduced participants to EasyBuild and to a tool developed by the Deucalion team to create containers for Python and Conda virtual environments. A separate session presented recent developments on the supercomputer, including code optimisation, scalability, new applications and the challenges involved in providing effective support to HPC users.

More than 300 members of the European supercomputing community met in Copenhagen for EuroHPC User Days 2025, held on 30 September and 1 October.

The event gave users the opportunity to present projects developed with EuroHPC supercomputing resources and AI Factories, share best practices and discuss their experience with the European HPC ecosystem. Sessions covered high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing, while also highlighting the support and opportunities available through the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking.

On 26 September 2025, from 2.00 p.m. until midnight, Forum Braga came alive with experiments, performances and conversations as the European Researchers’ Night (ERN) returned to the city.

Created by the European Commission in 2005, the European Researchers’ Night brings science closer to the public by highlighting its relevance to daily life and inspiring new generations of innovators. The programme offered a varied and hands-on journey through the worlds of physics, chemistry, biology and beyond.

For one afternoon and evening, science stepped out of the laboratory and came into the city, showing that discovery is a shared experience open to everyone.

Celebrating 40 editions, ISC High Performance 2025 brought the international computing community to Hamburg from 10 to 13 June under the theme “Connecting the Dots”.

The programme reflected how the boundaries between high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing continue to evolve. Researchers, technology providers, and HPC professionals shared knowledge through keynotes, technical sessions, workshops, tutorials and an international exhibition, with applications spanning science, engineering and business.

Coimbra hosted the 2025 edition of Jornadas FCCN from May 6 to 8, gathering Portugal’s higher education and research communities to explore emerging technologies and the digital services that support science, knowledge and collaboration.

Deucalion organised a DemoLab about “AI & Quantum: AlphaFold3, LLMs and Quantum Simulation”. The live session demonstrated how the Portuguese supercomputer can support protein structure modelling, distributed inference of large language models and quantum simulation, offering a practical view of advanced computing’s role in scientific research.

More than 1,000 participants from across Europe met in Kraków for the EuroHPC Summit 2025, held from 18 to 20 March at the ICE Congress Centre.

The Summit explored the latest developments in high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI), hardware and quantum computing. Alongside plenary and parallel sessions, participants could discover operational HPC systems through the Demo Lab, explore Europe’s quantum technologies and engage with projects funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking.

The EPICURE HPC in ARM Architecture Hackathon brought researchers, developers, and HPC users to Braga for four days of porting and optimising code for ARM processors.

Built around a “Bring Your Code” format, the event gave participants direct access to Deucalion’s ARM partition, where they could test their own applications with support from expert mentors. Technical sessions covered the A64FX processor, migration from x86 to ARM, AI on ARM, and performance at scale, along with hands-on lab work and a visit to Deucalion.

Under the theme “HPC Creates”, SC24 transformed Atlanta into a global showcase for high-performance computing (HPC) from 17 to 22 November 2024.

Researchers, engineers, technology providers and developers came together to present new ideas and explore developments across supercomputing, artificial intelligence (AI), computing architectures, networks, data and large-scale systems. Technical sessions, workshops and one of the world’s largest HPC exhibitions highlighted advanced computing’s role in scientific discovery and technological innovation.

The 4th Advanced Computing Meeting placed Portugal’s evolving high-performance computing (HPC) ecosystem at the centre of the discussion. Held on 5 and 6 November 2024 at the University of Beira Interior in Covilhã, the event connected researchers, technical experts and decision-makers regarding the future of advanced computing.

The programme addressed national and European HPC resources, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation, with particular attention to the new National Centre for Advanced Computing (CNCA) and the contribution of supercomputers such as Deucalion and MareNostrum 5 to scientific and technological innovation.

Around 200 members of the European supercomputing community reunited in Amsterdam for the second EuroHPC User Days, held on 22 and 23 October 2024.

Throughout the event, projects developed with EuroHPC resources presented their results, shared lessons and best practices, and contributed feedback on Europe’s supercomputing ecosystem. The programme also helped new and existing users discover the resources, access opportunities and support available through the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking.

ISC High Performance 2024 challenged the international computing community to rethink the future of high-performance computing (HPC). From 12 to 16 May, more than 3,000 participants gathered in Hamburg under the theme “Reinventing HPC”.

The programme examined how artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, quantum computing and emerging technologies are reshaping HPC. Through technical sessions, workshops and a major European HPC exhibition, ISC24 created a space to exchange ideas on new architectures, scientific computing and the technologies driving the next generation of advanced computing.

Europe’s next generation of supercomputing was at the centre of the EuroHPC Summit 2024, held in Antwerp from 18 to 21 March.

More than 700 participants from 45 countries joined discussions on exascale and post-exascale computing, artificial intelligence for high-performance computing (HPC), quantum technologies, energy efficiency and European chip initiatives. The programme combined strategic debates with technical sessions and live demonstrations of EuroHPC systems.

The first edition of EuroHPC User Day brought together users of EuroHPC systems to exchange knowledge, share experiences and explore the opportunities offered by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking.

Held in Brussels on 11 December 2023, the EuroHPC User Day featured parallel sessions on a range of topics. The programme allowed participants to deepen their understanding of EuroHPC resources, services and support. Users were also invited to present their projects and share their experiences of working with EuroHPC systems.

Deucalion also contributed to the event with a presentation dedicated to the supercomputer.

The 2023 National Advanced Computing Network (RNCA) Meeting brought users, technical teams and partners together in Vila Real on 7 and 8 November to strengthen Portugal’s high-performance computing ecosystem.

Hosted at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, the programme addressed new computing platforms, links between the RNCA and European supercomputing, access to national and European systems, partnerships and HPC skills development. The meeting also highlighted the benefits of advanced computing for research and innovation.
